The Ultrasound

Well, we had the ultrasound and we saw the baby moving about. The baby is very active. It was doing flips and kicks and stretching its legs. The doctors said the baby looks healthy. It has three arteries in the umbilical cord. It's nuchual fold measures normal. It's spine looks good. All fingers and toes are present. It's head is a normal size. It had vernix in the amionotic fluid. The baby looked like it was in a snow globe.

At the end of the ultrasound, we asked the tech if she saw the sex of the baby. She said she did and she had to be very sneaky about it or we would have found out. She wrote it down on the card like we planned.

At the end of the ultrasound, she said I had a low lying placenta. The placenta is supposed to form at the top of the uterus. A low lying placenta is near or covering the cervix. It can cause complications later in pregnancy (severe bleeding). The placenta near the cervix peels. Any contractions cause bleeding. If you have a low placenta around delivery they put you on bedrest and deliver the baby early with a c-section. If you have bleeding they will hospitalize you until delivery. Fortunately, the problem corrects itself in 90% of the cases. As the lower uterus grows, the placenta migrates away from the cervix. We will wait and see what happens. They will check the location of the placenta with ultrasounds regularly.
